Piecing Complete!

The top of the quilt is DONE! Currently, it roughly measures 55" by 78". I am 61". It is mucho taller than I am. Now, all I need to do buy the batting and backing and get started on that, and then I'll be done! Until I get those needed supplies, however, I believe I am going to start on Reese's crazy quilt. I'm making a mini-quilt that will be roughly crib sized out of the scraps from her big quilt as a crazy quilt. Should be fun.

I can't really start on Jonathan's quilt yet, because I only have 45 squares. I really don't like to start piecing until I have all of my squares.

If you would like to contribute to Jonathan's quilt, please email me. I have the same size and fabric requirements as I did for Reese's quilt, but I am asking for neutral or boy-specific fabrics. Contributions would be awesome.

I am also collecting for 2 charity quilts, one for our local prostate cancer foundation and one for our local branch of the Susan G. Komen Foundation for breast cancer. I'm collecting orange and blue (like their logo, more or less) for the prostate cancer one, and dark pink, light pink, and whites/cremes for the breast cancer one. When completed, both will be donated to their respective foundations for them to do as they will with, either auction them off, or, as Susan G. Komen said they may do, give it to one of the Survivors at the Race for the Cure. I am doing this because my dad was diagnosed with prostate cancer in November and has a prostatectomy in January. He is now completely cancer-free with a PSA of 0.00. My best friend growing up's grandmother was diagnosed with breast cancer in the last year and has had 2 masectomies since we got home with Reese. I am making a breast cancer quilt in honor of her, because she is the one who taught me how to sew. You can email me as well if you would like to donate to either/both of those quilts.

what's done so far

this should be rotated into a vertical picture, but I didn't realize that until now

I've begun really putting all of the front together. So far, I have 3 of the 7 rows finished. Then I have to do the borders around the edges. Then it's a matter of getting batting and backing and putting it together. Should be interesting. If you have any tips please email me or leave a comment. :)

I don't know why I've suddenly wanted to get this finished, but I do. Maybe it's that I have about half a dozen other quilts I'd like to do, but I'll feel bad if I set this one aside to do this. Go figure, my possibly largest quilt EVER will be my first. Yeah, intelligent, I know.

I plan on using the scraps from this quilt to make a "crazy quilt" at approximately crib/toddler size.

The sashing in between the squares is exactly the same color as the walls are painted in her room. I was going for something in the same area, but I never guessed it'd be exact.

On another note, I am making a 100 Good Wishes Quilt for my 3 week old nephew, Jonathan. He's a biological baby and was a pleasant surprise for my sister and brother-in-law. I am currently collecting squares for his quilt, same specifications as for Reese's quilt, if you'd like to donate to it. My sister has always had trouble getting pregnant, her first 2 children came about with some help, and this was her first baby she hadn't had to have medical intervention to get pregnant with. You can see pictures of him at Journey with Reese. Donations would be greatly appreciated.

Finished with the squares!

I finished piecing the actual squares about 5 minutes ago. Now I have to get out to buy the fabric for the sashing, etc. Anyone have any tips for sashing and putting the actual quilt together? This is my first quilt so yeah, newbie. I have 34 squares that are 8x8 in. a piece. If anyone has any tips for the size and layout, PLEASE let me know.

It's so cool that this is getting so close (in my mind) to being done. I can't wait!

I wish I could say I was done piecing. Sadly, that is not so.

I was half-way though a square when my sewing machine bobbin ran out. And it hasn't worked since. We killed two needles (bent them to he** and back) in one evening and determined that was a sign to give up. And we just haven't gotten the machine to the Machine Doctor. So, no new pretties.

I have begun piecing on my mother's 23 year old Kenmore sewing machine. And the bobbin hates me. I had to wind a new one today because the one I had ran out...and now it's being stupid and won't pull through. Grrr.... But the fact that I'm piecing does not in ANY WAY mean you can't still contribute. Obviously, this will not be a 100 Good Wishes Quilt, as I am well into the 120's. And it is becoming apparent in my planning world (which is really abstract and loose on facts, LOL) that I still need more to make the darn thing a rectangle. Sooooo....feel free to continue to contribute. If I don't need them for this project, I'll use them in the next (which is top-secret). So, they WILL be used, some how or another. I'm planning on using the scraps from cutting out the little 5x5 squares out of 8x8 and larger squares to make a smaller quilt that's more kid-sized. Like a scrap quilt/crazy quilt thing. It's going to be really random. I'm not going to bother with sashing on it. The hope is it'll be about toddler sized, a little bigger.

I'm grouping squares into groups of 4 (unless they can't be cut down, like the 2 contributions from awesome people in my Irish dancing world) by color, theme, or...if there is not enough of them to have 4....a random or half-and-half square.

The collapsible umbrella is said to have been invented during Cao Wei in ancient China, roughly 1700 years ago. The Chinese character for umbrella is - (san) and is a pictograph resembling the modern umbrella in design. Some investigators have supposed that its invention was first created by tying large leaves to bough-like ribs (the branching out parts of the umbrella). She bought this fabric while in Taiyuan, and she offered to send me a piece. I am using it to honor Reese's birth mother, birth family, and her birth land.

She also sent me a disk of photos she took while she was in Taiyuan. So we know have pictures of places we didn't get to see, and a few places look familiar, so we may have driven past them. :)

Look at all the squishes!

I would say 'can you spot yours?', and some you can, but being as I am 5' 1.5", it's not that great of a vantage point. That's my laptop, and my cat, Chen Le, who was quite upset because she laid down right where the last squish had to go...because I was out of room. I have 44 squishes, from 15 states in the USA, Puerto Rico, 1 province of Canada, and 1 state of Australia.
And it's already massive.
And I have a queen size bed.

So, yeah, at some point, these will probably be cut down to a smaller size and I'll make one big quilt and a smaller one out of what I cut off. I think if I don't she'll have a California King size quilt...and I'm quilting it so....

It's pretty fun to just lay them out and look at them all. Problem is, my cats want to walk all over them and sniff them and that makes things drastically more difficult.

This fabric doesn't really show up well in the picture. It has little darker gold stars and swirls on it that you can't really see in the picture.
